Hi all! We all have those days when we reflect on what is and is not working in our classroom. I've been reflecting the last few days on what is working for my 4th grade classroom this year.

First of all, I credit the mostly positive student behavior in my classroom to the great Classroom Dojo. I've been a Dojo addict for the past 4 years and swear by it! Those not familiar with this app, should check it out! Did I tell you that it is free? Well it is!!!

Key items: 

First, it has an easy classroom setup. It takes maybe 10 minutes to type in your students' names. Then the computer assigns a different Dojo monster for each child. (The students do have the ability to change their monster.)

Next, you get to choose what skills you want you students to follow (stay on task, homework, participation etc.). If they do well they get green or positive Dojo points. If they aren't doing well in a certain area you can give them a negative or red mark.  These points are tracked throughout the year. You can, at any time, check out how an individual student is doing. You can check daily behavior, weekly, monthly, or yearly. This comes in real handy for monthly incentives and during parent teacher conferences. Yay, instant data!

Another great feature is the parent account. Each parent can download their own Dojo App for FREE and follow the daily progress of their own student.  I can also send out group messages or individual texts.  I have 95% of my parents on my classroom Dojo and they love it! I also have the ability to send pictures of activities going on in our classroom. For  example, yesterday we went on a field trip to the wonderful Hershey Museum, and I snapped a few pics and sent them out to the parents.  They can view the pics, like, and/or comment on all pictures. Dojo also offers translation. I work in a high Spanish speaking community. If the parents don't know English, they can hit a translator button and magically they can read it. Love that!

I also appreciate the "share it" feature.  I can invite other teachers that work with my students to join my classroom. Those teachers then have the ability to give or take points in their classroom. This works well with small groups and specials! My specialists are all connected.(tip: make a skill for each of those extra teachers ie. gym teacher pushes the "specials" skill button only. I have a specials button for green and red points)

Lastly, I can't tell you how much I use the random student button in my classroom.  I use it instead of pulling sticks out of a cup. (I always lost sticks...ugh) I also use it for my Mystery Walker. Whenever we leave the room I choose a random student as my mystery walker. That student has no idea if they are the mystery walker, so they all walk in a straight line silently and keep their hands to themselves. This also works wonders for lining students up prior to leaving the classroom lol.

Learning the 50 States and Capitals with any class can be a daunting task.  I've been searching for a product that would break up the states by regions and include quizzes/tests and study maps. I searched high and low, but couldn't find what I wanted. So like any TPT'er I searched for clip art and created my own. I'm hoping my product can also help other teachers in their state and capital quest. Enjoy!

 I included a whole 50 states and 50 capital test with answer keys. Along with regional quizzes for states and capitals.

 I downloaded my PDF into my Activinspire and had colorful and easy to read maps for my students to review and show what they know. They love showing off their knowledge.

 I copied my packets and placed them into folders for easy use during Social Studies.  Enjoy my product!

Our school is introducing The Leader in Me along with the "7 Habits of Happy Kids" this year. I wanted to find resources to help my students better understand what these habits are and how I can implement them in my classroom. The book was an easy read on the beach! I found it very informative and it gave many examples of how other schools and teachers were squeezing the lessons into their already full day.


 I found the following resources to make my life easier. Hopefully some will work for your classroom.

Library Learners blog has a great selection of read aloud books that focus on each of the habits!

Always Sunny Project has a great set of posters! Most likely using these in my room. I love the simplicity of the color and design. Very Nice!

The Teaching Oasis has some great posters that simply explain the "7 Habits"  There are several versions that would work with any classroom.

Finally, I created an "I Am A Leader" poem for my class to start thinking, acting, and finding their inner leader. Have a great week!

Here we go again! This will be my 16th year teaching in the Reading School District.  I've learned a lot along the way and sharpened my skills with every lesson taught.

As much as I love being a teacher, one of my favorite things to do is set up my classroom.  This year was even more exciting with a new room and a new grade. Another difference this year is all of my students will be the same.  I've never looped with a group before but I'm looking forward to seeing their little faces tomorrow at open house!

 Below are frames I will use for grouping students. The magnet have their names on them and can easily move to a different group!

 Loving their name tags this year. I like to keep the name tags on their desk simple and small.

 My group table with my Sort-o Game in progress! This game is loads of fun and educational! The kids love playing! My learn to write board is to the left. My students love to write whenever they have a free minute.

 My window coverings are actually being used for more bulletin board space. Above I have Go Math vocabulary preview words , for the first couple chapters, which come along with definitions cards that will be posted as we learn them. Below are critical verbs that I grouped if more than one verb had similar meanings.

 Finally, I have my closet doors with Prefix and Suffix words and critical nouns. The third door has goal graphing charts and the fourth door has my classroom jobs posted.

Spending time with friends and family is how I let go of my stress.  I find these final days prior to the start of school is when I need these distractions from work the most.  How do you let go of stress prior to starting day? Last night, I had a stress-free time watching the Eagles win a preseason game! Lets hope they can keep on winning this season!

That being said, I am now thinking about my classroom ( sorry I can't stop ugh) and the few things that need to be done decoratively prior to lesson creation time.

I'm not quite ready for the big review, but I do have my Brag Tag wall to show you! I was just thinking about going to the dollar store to purchase the final plastic hooks I need to complete this area.
